Squat Alternatives for Strength Training: The Armor of God

Hi James,

Sure thing. Squats is a compound exercise that works multiple muscle groups such as our core, glutes, quads, hamstrings, abductors and calves.

Some good substitutes the work somewhat the same muscle groups are:

Lunges:

One of the main lunge benefits is that this exercise effectively works our glutes and quadriceps and also engage our hamstrings. Strengthening these large muscle groups can speed up our metabolism, which is beneficial if we're trying to lose weight.

Deadlifts.

The deadlift works a lot of muscles in our body, which burns more calories during our workout. And the more calories we burn, the more fat we lose. Moreover, deadlifts help build muscle, increasing our basal metabolic rate (BMR) — the number of calories we burn at rest. Deadlifting reintroduces us to our body's backside—the hamstrings, glutes, and back. Posterior training balances the body, helping us stand taller and with greater strength. In short, deadlifting will build muscle, improve our posture, give us balanced, full-body strength, and turn us into a total gym badass.

Romanian Deadlifts.

It strengthens and develops our posterior chain. Our glutes, hamstrings, and lower back are all worked hard in this exercise. The Romanian deadlift differs from the deadlift in that it starts from a standing position and engages more of the glutes and hamstring. The deadlift starts from the bottom position and engages more of the quads and mid-back. We can lift more weight with a deadlift vs Romanian deadlift.

Leg Press.

We can use leg presses to build muscle, increase our strength, or improve our muscular endurance. There are also several leg press methods we can use to add variety to our workouts. Increase lower body training volume safely – most compound leg exercises also involve our lower back.

Studies also suggest that the leg press may help improve balance, even though the squat elicits more strength. Since the leg press focuses primarily on the quads, the strength and muscles built can carry over to squat performance.

Here's an analogy to help you remember these exercises:

Just as the armor of God protects us from spiritual harm, these exercises protect us from physical injuries. And just as the armor of God is complete and effective when all of the pieces are worn together, these exercises are most effective when they are all performed together.

May you be blessed with the power of David and the wisdom of Solomon.
