EXERCISE: SPOT REDUCTION IS A MYTH - FOCUS ON OVERALL FITNESS TO LOSE BELLY FAT
"What are the best exercises to lose belly fat?"
I will just give it to you STRAIGHT: You can do a MILLION crunches all you want. Your belly fat will be the LAST to lose. NOT the first.
This is because crunches are NOT a very effective way to burn calories. They can help to STRENGTHEN your core muscles, but they won't do much to reduce belly fat.
Take it from me - this is Science and my own experience talking.
“So, what should I do?” You asked.
Focus on your OVERALL FITNESS! When you IMPROVE your overall fitness, you will lose belly fat as a COMPLEMENTARY BENEFIT.
Here's why:
Exercise regularly, you BURN CALORIES. This helps to reduce your overall body fat, including belly fat.
Exercise also helps to BUILD MUSCLE, which burns more calories at rest. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the AFTERBURN EFFECT, or more scientifically known as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). It means that I can relax on my couch, watching Netflix, while my body CONTINUES to burn fat. I love it!
“What kind of exercise is best for losing belly fat?”
A combination of CARDIO and STRENGTH TRAINING is best.
Cardio exercises, such as RUNNING, SWIMMING, AND BIKING, burn calories and improve CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH.
Strength training exercises, such as LIFTING WEIGHTS and BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES, help to BUILD MUSCLE and IMPROVE STRENGTH.
“How much exercise do you need to lose belly fat?”
Aim for at least 30 minutes of MODERATE INTENSITY EXERCISE most days of the week. If you're new to exercise, start slowly and gradually increase the duration and intensity of your workouts over time.
EAT A HEALTHY DIET.
Take plenty of FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND WHOLE GRAINS. And stay away from PROCESSED FOODS, SUGARY DRINKS, AND UNHEALTHY FATS.
Can you imagine running off 30 minutes worth of calories, just to burn away that #$%& piece of cake you just had?
Not worth it, right?
So PRACTISE MINDFUL EATING.
Losing belly fat takes TIME AND DELIBERATE EFFORT, but it's WORTH IT for your health and well-being.
Here are some additional tips for losing belly fat:
- GET ENOUGH SLEEP. Sleep is essential for overall health and well-being, and it may also play a role in belly fat loss.
- MANAGE STRESS. Stress can lead to the production of the hormone cortisol, which can promote belly fat storage. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, yoga, or meditation.
- BE PATIENT. It takes time to lose belly fat. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results immediately. Just keep exercising REGULARLY, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep, and you will eventually reach your goals.
